Top 5 winter cleaning hacks

veryone knows about spring cleaning, right? But what’s wrong with a little bit of winter cleaning to keep the mind off everything that’s going on outside. It’s the perfect time to be staying inside with the family, so you might as well make the family home as clean as you can. Keep the home spotless, keep the kids safe and keep everyone occupied, it’s almost a Christmas miracle!

1. Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate

Winter is the worst time for dust. We’re all indoors, usually with the windows shut, and that’s what dust loves. So our biggest tip is to do everything you can to keep air moving around in your home, whether that’s with indoor fans, or leaving some windows open, or keeping doors open to circulate air within the home, whatever you can do in your space to keep air moving will help to stop dust from settling. It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of dusting down any surfaces that will collect lots of dust, mantelpieces, tops of cupboards, or countertops for instance.

2. Deep clean the kitchen

The kitchen is an absolute saviour during the winter months, so make sure to take good care of it. The oven will be so key in preparing those delicious holiday feasts to share with family, so make sure to give it a deep clean. We’d recommend really getting into the oven to get rid of any grease and grime that’s been building up to make sure it doesn’t get the chance to settle and affect your lovely Christmas cooking. We’d also recommend giving the fridge a good once-over. The inside of the fridge can get covered in difficult stains that affect the other food in there, so make sure to take care of those as and when they pop up. For the back of the fridge, we’d recommend unplugging the fridge for a few minutes and getting rid of any build-up on the fridge coils. Having dirty coils can actually cost you in electricity, so it’s good to check in on them every so often.

3. Get steaming

The big downside of the winter end of the year is the amount of dirt, mud, and rain that’s going to end up on carpets inside the house. Especially if you’ve got little ones or just unhelpful big ones, letting those stains settle could be the worst mistake you make this winter. It’s also a good idea to steam any appropriate furniture, just to make sure they’re extra clean and ready to be full of relaxing family members and the occasional hot cocoa spill.

4. Winterise your porch

You can also get proactive with the dirty shoes dragging everything into the house. It might be the perfect time to get a nice sturdy welcome mat for everyone to stamp their dirty boots on, or even a scraper to get extra prepared for the mud and snow. Make sure to give these a quick once-over every once in a while, otherwise they will start to smell and become much less effective. They can also serve as nice accessories for the entryway to your home in the summer months, so you might as well find something that suits your aesthetic.

5. Clean the cosy gear

Blankets, jumpers and thick socks are all going to be in high demand as we get into the coldest part of the year. So, in preparation, it’s going to be an absolute must to get any big fluffy clothes into the washing machine well in time for when the family starts asking for them. With all of these materials, make sure to be aware of what temperatures and cycles they can go through, we wouldn’t want any comically small Christmas jumpers...or would we?
