Whilst the most popular social media platform is still Facebook, there is success to be found in using a wide range of other platforms. The key is to decide where your target audience will be and how best to engage with them.

In February 2021, Weetabix decided to stir up some controversy by posting an image of their cereal adorned with Heinz baked beans. Clearly not the usual way for consumers to enjoy their product, and it sparked a heated debate on social media, with other well-known brands (like Specsavers, Dominos and Tesco) and even the House of Commons getting involved! One controversial image and a simple caption was all it needed.

Online controversy almost became a law suit in April 2021 when Aldi launched a replica of Marks and Spencer's best-selling Colin the Caterpillar cake, and named him Cuthbert. The marketing content was striking, bold and gutsy, and succeeded in becoming one of the most talked-about social media campaigns at the time.

KFC adopted more of a 'reuse and recycle' angle in the same year with hilarious but highly contentious results. They dropped their 64-year-old tagline "It's Finger Lickin' Good" due to COVID-19 and the global pandemic, and instead decided to pluck (!) inspiration from other brands. Our favourite was the nod to Red Bull, with an image of a bucket of chicken and the caption "Gives you wings". It's no wonder they added #PleaseDontSueKFC onto the end.
